A biocompatible and bioactive surface coated with a precursor of Vitamin D, used by the bone cells to locally produce active vitamin D, which stimulates bone formation.

Overview

Ti is the material most commonly used for bone implants as it has outstanding physical and biological properties, such as low density, high mechanical strength, and good corrosion resistance. Current dental implant research aims at the production of innovative surfaces able to promote a more favorable biological response to the implant material at the bone-implant interface and to accelerate osseointegration. The modification of titanium (Ti) implants with therapeutic agents allows a better biological response to the implant material whilst improves osseointegration. Our invention refers to a biocompatible and bioactive surface coated with a precursor of Vitamin D — UV-activated 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC). After implantation, the coating is used by the bone cells to locally produce active vitamin D, which stimulates bone formation.

By using UV-activated 7-DHC, on one hand production costs of the coating are highly decreased compared to using the active form of Vitamin D and on the other hand, cellular self-production of active vitamin D reduces the risk of vitamin D overdoses and toxicity associated effects.
