Biological aerosol sampler and concentration. IP is centered on an electrostatics based sampler which can be used for ‘gentle’ (i.e., while retaining viability) collection of biological aerosols. The accompanying IP is focused on electrostatics for concentration of bio-aerosols into a small volume.

Primary Application of the Technology

While the technology is primarily targeted for the biodefense arena, it could be adapted for other industries such as environmental, food, agriculture, health care and even space applications (dust mitigation).

How the Technology Solves the Problem

Particles can be removed from the air by giving them a positive or negative charge and passing them between two oppositely charged surfaces. This process is called electrostatic collection and is already used by air purifiers to remove dust. The seller has advanced this technology to produce a portable electrostatic air sampler that collects and concentrates particles from the air for analysis.

• High efficiencies, even for small particles – since collection/concentration depends on a combination of particle charge and size, it provides an additional degree of control.

• Scalable air sampling rate – collection/concentration is governed by a balance of aerodynamic and electrostatic forces and electrostatic forces can be scaled to meet sampling rate requirements.

• High viability, “gentle” collection/concentration – bio-aerosols are not subjected to high shear rates, thereby preserving viability.

• Very low power consumption – air flow is not manipulated through bends and turn, so the pressure drop and consequently power consumption is very low.

• Compact, lightweight, low noise and maintenance
