Generally, electrical devices include circuit breakers (e.g., ground-fault circuit interrupter or GFCI) or other circuit disconnect mechanisms for detecting and preventing current leakage. However, these circuit breakers cannot prevent power leakages when the connection wirings are reversed (e.g., a short circuit). Further, these protection mechanisms may fail due to malfunction of some component (e.g., an electro-magnetic actuator) in these circuits, resulting in serious safety hazards. Therefore, electrical wiring devices having improved safety mechanisms are required.

Disclosed are the components, structures, and actuation mechanisms for electrical wiring devices such as power cords, receptacles, or circuit breakers (e.g., GFCI devices). These electrical wiring devices include improved leakage current detection, and protection mechanisms for ensuring safety. Further, the devices use improved mechanical or electro-magnetic actuation mechanisms for disconnecting circuits in an event of current leakage or a short circuit. For example, these devices may perform periodic checks on a leakage current detection circuit for proper operation. In case the detection circuit is not working properly, the circuit breaker automatically disconnects the power supply, thus ensuring safety. These mechanisms provide safety for various electrical appliances such as washing machine, air conditioner, power cords, or receptacles, etc., that may implement features required by various codes and standards.
