Water Conservation Device

Liquid Conservation device and a liquid apparatus incorporating the liquid conservation device

Overview

A water saving device for use in a hot water system to recover an initial volume of cold water when a hot water tap is turned on. The device has an inlet for receiving water piped from a water heater, a primary outlet for delivering hot water to a tap, and a by-pass outlet through which any cooled water is diverted by a thermally actuated shuttle valve. The device also includes a secondary valve for closing off the by-pass outlet when the water pressure downstream of the primary outlet is high (such as when the down stream hot water delivery tap is closed and opening the by pass outlet when the water pressure downstream of the primary outlet is low, such as when the downstream hot water delivery tap is opened.

Primary Application of the Technology

Domestic Households, Commercial Properties, Accommodation Facilities, Sports & Recreation Centres, Military Bases

The Problem Solved by the Technology

The device saves the cold water (that otherwise goes down the drain while waiting for the hot water to reach the outlet) sitting in the plumbing line between the hot water source (eg. cylinder/Solar Unit/Gas Unit). Average savings are approximately 7 litres per tap/shower use, up to 20 litres.

How the Technology Solves the Problem

No power required, suitable for solar powered homes. Small discreet unit can even fit behind pedestal basin. The unit can also service a series of outlets eg. Bathroom with 2 sinks, bath & shower. No circular plumbing system required (unlike the pumping systems currently available).

Competitive Advantage

The device does not require power to actuate. Water is saved without further energy input. Actuation is automatic.

Comments on Deal Structure, Potential Terms and Restrictions

Australian & US Patents available.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the water go that is saved? The water is automatically diverted to a place of the users choosing eg. Small tank, larger holding tank, garden drip feed system, irrigation system.

Patent Summary

U.S. Patent Classes & Classifications Covered in this listing:

Class 236: Automatic Temperature And Humidity Regulation

Automatic temperature and humidity regulation, this class is confined to automatically operating temperature or humidity controlling mechanism.

Subclass 12.19: Axially spaced flow control faces
Subclass 93R: In fluid controlled

Class 137: Fluid Handling

Fluid material handling, and takes processes, systems, combinations, subcombinations and certain elements pertaining thereto not otherwise classified. Fluid materials include gas and liquids primarily, but the handling of other flowable materials, as fluent granular solids, is also found. Handling of fluent material by flow, as by confining, directing, causing and/or controlling the flow, and includes making the material available for flow or separating a smaller from a larger body of fluid material, as by tanks, containers, receivers, traps, etc., or pipes or conduits, with or without siphons, pumps, pressure or displacing fluids or other flow imparting means.

Subclass 337: Hot and cold water system having a connection from the hot to the cold channel
Subclass 468: Thermal responsive
