Hextender- Nut Starter

Nut starter device developed for grasping and installing hex nuts for general assembly

Overview

The nut starter is created and assembled in a manner to be considered an extension of the operator’s hand. The ‘forceps’ of the nut starter are designed to act as a mechanical pair of tweezers with a spring force action to hold and secure the hex nut in its visible orientation during its installation onto a threaded stud.

The hex nut may then be rotated onto its threaded mate per the operator’s preference. The nut starter may then be removed from its contact with the hex nut without further mechanical loosening or adjusting. The forceps are squeezed together in order to expand the contact-end of each forcep to provide proper distance to grasp the flats of the hex nut. The nut starter is not intended to provide a mechanical torque specification. The nut starter may be applied to various sizes of standard and metric hex nuts.

The nut starter may then be removed from its contact with the hex nut once the hex nut is in position. The nut starter is not intended to provide a mechanical torque specification but as a pre-installation tool. The nut starter may be applied to various sizes of standard and metric hex nuts.

Accessibility within an assembly and a related requirement for the installation of a hex nut or hex nuts may be improved by the use of the nut starter being presented. Conditions within an operation or assembly requiring special hex nut placement, turning motion, and disengagement by a tool may be addressed with the nut starter.

Existing methods of installing hex nut or ‘Nylok’ nuts have limitations:

1) May be started by hand held socket drivers or directly into the extended socket / torque driver but may provide no means of ‘securing’ the nut, without falling out, when applied vertically over the mating screw or threaded member such as a pre-installed PEM stud.

2) Magnetic sockets provide no retention to stainless steel hex nuts.

Primary Application of the Technology

Accessibility within an assembly and a related requirement for the installation of a hex nut or hex nuts may be improved by the use of the nut starter being presented. Conditions within an operation or assembly requiring special hex nut placement, turning motion, and disengagement by a tool may be addressed with the nut starter.
